Registrar General advocates for Intellectual Property advancement at Global Innovation Symposium
Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB)
Job Description
Uganda’s innovation agenda took centre stage at the recent Global Innovation Index (GII) symposium, held on 15th and 16th May, 2025, where the Registrar General, Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho, delivered a compelling address on the nation’s innovation strategy. Representing the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), Ms. Kainobwisho underscored the country’s commitment to fostering creativity and technological advancement through strengthened intellectual property (IP) systems. “The GII offers a mirror to reflect on our innovation performance and identify areas for growth,” she noted. Ms. Kainobwisho emphasised the role of policy frameworks like the National Intellectual Property Policy in safeguarding innovations and attracting investment. She called for stronger inter-agency collaboration to overcome systemic challenges and unlock Uganda’s potential in the mobile technology and artificial intelligence sectors. Ms. Kainobwisho also spotlighted the need to boost registrations of patents, trademarks, and copyrights, key indicators in global innovation rankings. “Protecting innovation fuels progress,” she stated, urging researchers, entrepreneurs, and creatives to actively engage with the IP system. Through the URSB’s leadership, Uganda is charting a deliberate course toward innovation-driven development, with intellectual property as a central pillar in achieving its Vision 2040 goals.
