Job Description
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of government and the international community for action. UNEP's Policy and Programme Division (PPD) is a center of excellence for strategic guidance and programmatic policy for UNEP, enabling UNEP's strategic and programmatic direction, ensuring organization-wide coherence and effectiveness in implementation and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Collect, clean, and manage quantitative data from international and national statistical sources relevant to UNEP's environmental impact indicators, including energy, climate, ecosystem, and pollution datasets.
- Build and analyze panel datasets; apply quasi-experimental and statistical methods — including difference-in-differences, matching, and related approaches — to estimate causal impacts of UNEP interventions.
- Conduct geospatial analysis using satellite-derived environmental data to support retrospective impact assessment of UNEP projects in areas such as land cover change, ecosystem condition, and pollution exposure.
- Contribute to portfolio-level aggregation and synthesis of project-level impact estimates, including quantitative meta-analysis.
- Draft analytical notes, methodology documents, indicator guidance, and sections of formal reports for review by senior management and governing bodies.
- Support the facilitation of structured workshops and consultations with UNEP project managers, including preparation of materials, data instruments, and documentation.
- Contribute to presentations, briefings, and talking points for UNEP senior leadership and intergovernmental processes.
- Provide flexible and ad hoc support the Directorate in various duties, as and when required and perform any other related tasks assigned by the supervisor.
