Job Description

RCL FOODS is a deeply rooted South African food manufacturer that produces some of the country’s most-loved brands. We are currently looking for a qualified and experienced Diesel Mechanic to be based at our operating site in Pietermaritzburg. The position will report to the Transport Manager.

The purpose of the position is to carry out maintenance and preventive service in accordance with the maintenance schedule plan and breakdowns, and attend to after-hours breakdowns on our local delivery fleet and forklifts.

Minimum Requirements

• Matric
• N3 National Certificate as Diesel Mechanic
• 4-5 years’ experience as a qualified mechanic in a workshop environment
• 1 year in a supervisory role
• Experience with various makes of delivery vehicles and forklift models
• Fault finding and fleet maintenance software knowledge
• Auto electrical maintenance (advantageous)
• Initiative, assertiveness, stress tolerance, proactivity, attention to detail, deadline-driven, people orientated, results-oriented, problem-solving skills
• First point of contact in resolving technical fleet maintenance problems
• Demonstrate willingness to help others, self-driven, attention to detail, staff supervision, conflict resolution, people orientated communication, technical verbal communication, basic verbal instruction

Duties & Responsibilities

• Execute the preventative maintenance schedule
• Perform delivery vehicle breakdown services as required
• Attend to after-hour vehicle breakdowns
• Perform minor auto electrician repairs
• Prepare vehicles for annual Certificate of Fitness (COF)
• Ensure all mechanical tasks are completed according to the job card specifications
• Ensure cost-effective utilization of parts (new & used)
• Assess services rendered by external suppliers are of high quality within the agreed scope of work
• Analyze fleet fuel consumption figures and take corrective action measures
• Ensure team availability to allocated tasks
• Accurate and timeous recording of teams' time sheets
• Ensure good working relations between staff
• Manage performance of mechanical assistants and address issues
• Adhere to and enforce company disciplinary code
• Be an ambassador for Our Way
• Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of work are consistently and accurately maintained
• Take ownership and accountability for tasks and activities for direct reports and demonstrate effective self-management in terms of planning, prioritizing
